Brushing and cleaning between your teeth removes plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease.
- Brush twice a day for about two minutes, including last thing at night.
- Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled manual or electric brush.
- Angle the brush toward the gumline and use gentle, small circular movements.
- Clean every surface: the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of every tooth.
- Clean between teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
- Spit, do not rinse, after brushing, so the fluoride keeps working.
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Bleeding gums are a common sign of gum inflammation, so if they continue for more than a few days, see your dentist.
