Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can cause sunburn, premature skin aging and skin cancer, even on cloudy or cool days. Simple habits offer good protection.
- Use sunscreen: choose a broad-spectrum product with SPF 30 or higher and apply it generously to exposed skin.
- Reapply: about every two hours, and after swimming or sweating.
- Seek shade: especially around the middle of the day, when UV is strongest.
- Cover up: wear a wide-brimmed hat, clothing that covers your skin and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Avoid tanning beds: they also expose you to harmful UV.
Keep babies under six months out of direct sun. Check your skin regularly, and see a doctor about any new, changing or unusual spots or moles.
