Asthma is a long-term condition in which the airways become inflamed and narrow, causing wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathlessness. With the right treatment, most people can live full, active lives.
Common triggers include:
- Colds and chest infections.
- Pollen, dust mites, mold and pet dander.
- Cigarette smoke and air pollution.
- Cold air and exercise.
Take preventer medicines as prescribed, even when you feel well, and always carry your reliever inhaler. Ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist to check your inhaler technique and help you create a written asthma action plan.
Call emergency services if your reliever is not helping, you are too breathless to speak, eat or sleep, or your lips or fingernails look blue or gray.
