When a Cough Needs a Doctor’s Attention

Most coughs clear up on their own, but some warning signs mean you should get checked.

Most coughs are caused by colds or other viral infections and clear up on their own within about three weeks. Rest, fluids, warm drinks with honey (not for babies under one year) and simple pain relief can help you feel more comfortable.

See a doctor if:

  • Your cough lasts longer than three weeks.
  • You cough up blood.
  • You have chest pain, a high fever or unexplained weight loss.
  • You feel short of breath or wheezy.
  • Your cough keeps coming back or changes, especially if you smoke.
  • You have a weakened immune system or a long-term lung condition.

Seek emergency help if you have severe difficulty breathing, are coughing up large amounts of blood, or your lips or face turn blue. In young children, fast or labored breathing also needs urgent care.
