Physical therapy helps people recover from injury, surgery or illness and manage long-term conditions through movement, exercise and hands-on care. Your first visit is mainly about understanding your problem.

The therapist will usually:

  • Ask about your symptoms, medical history and daily activities.
  • Assess how you move, including strength, flexibility, balance and posture.
  • Explain what they think is causing the problem.
  • Agree on goals with you, such as walking further or returning to sport.
  • Start treatment, which may include exercises, hands-on techniques and advice.

Wear comfortable clothing that lets the therapist see and move the affected area, and bring any referral letters, scan reports or a list of your medicines. Some discomfort during exercises can be normal, but tell your therapist if anything causes sharp or worsening pain.
