Why Your Home Exercise Program Matters for Recovery

The exercises you do between physical therapy sessions often make the biggest difference to recovery.

Your physical therapist will often give you exercises to do at home between sessions. Doing them consistently is one of the most important parts of recovery, as appointments alone are rarely enough.

  • Schedule them: link your exercises to a daily routine, such as after breakfast.
  • Get the technique right: ask for written instructions, pictures or a video, and focus on quality over speed.
  • Track progress: note repetitions, any pain and improvements in a simple log.
  • Progress gradually: do not jump ahead to harder exercises without advice.
  • Ask questions: tell your therapist if an exercise is confusing or does not seem to help.

Mild muscle soreness can be normal. Stop and contact your therapist or doctor if you have sharp pain, new swelling, numbness, or pain that is clearly getting worse.
