Sinusitis is swelling of the sinuses, the air-filled spaces behind your cheeks, nose and forehead. It often follows a cold and is usually caused by a virus.
Symptoms include a blocked or runny nose, pain or pressure around the face, a reduced sense of smell and thick nasal discharge. Most cases improve within two to three weeks.
- Rest and drink plenty of fluids.
- Rinse your nose with a saltwater (saline) solution.
- Take simple pain relief if needed.
- Ask a pharmacist about decongestant sprays, which should only be used for a few days.
See a doctor if symptoms are severe, last more than about 10 days without improving, or keep coming back. Seek urgent care for swelling or redness around the eyes, vision changes, a severe headache, a stiff neck or confusion.
