Ear Wax: Safe Ways to Keep Your Ears Clean

Ears usually clean themselves, and poking inside them can do more harm than good.

Ear wax is natural and protective. It traps dust and germs, and in most people it moves out of the ear on its own, so ears rarely need cleaning inside.

  • Clean only the outer ear with a washcloth.
  • Avoid putting cotton swabs, fingers or other objects into the ear canal, as they can push wax deeper or damage the eardrum.
  • Avoid ear candles, which do not work and can cause burns.
  • If wax builds up, ear drops from a pharmacy can soften it. Ask a pharmacist which product suits you.

If drops do not help, a doctor or nurse can remove the wax safely. Do not use drops if you have, or might have, a hole in your eardrum. See a doctor if you have ear pain, discharge, sudden hearing loss, dizziness or ringing in your ears.
