Well-child checkups are routine visits with your child’s doctor or nurse, even when your child is healthy. They are scheduled more often in the first years of life and become less frequent as children grow.
At these visits, the doctor may:
- Measure height, weight and, in babies, head size to track growth.
- Check developmental milestones, such as movement, speech and social skills.
- Give recommended vaccines.
- Screen vision, hearing and other aspects of health at certain ages.
- Talk about sleep, feeding, behavior and safety.
Write down your questions beforehand, as no concern is too small. Keep a record of vaccines and growth. Between visits, contact your doctor if you are worried about your child’s health or development rather than waiting for the next checkup.
