The menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. In adults, a cycle commonly lasts between 21 and 35 days, and bleeding usually lasts two to seven days. Cycles can be less regular in the first few years after periods start and in the years before menopause.
Talk to a doctor if you have:
- Periods that suddenly become irregular, or stop when you are not pregnant.
- Very heavy bleeding, such as soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours.
- Bleeding between periods or after sex.
- Period pain that stops you from doing everyday activities.
- Any bleeding after menopause.
Tracking your cycle in a diary or app makes changes easier to notice and describe. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting.
