Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion caused by long-term stress, most often linked to work. It tends to build slowly, so it is easy to miss.

Common signs include:

  • Feeling drained most of the time, even after rest.
  • Feeling cynical, detached or negative about your work.
  • Finding it harder to concentrate or get things done.
  • Headaches, poor sleep or getting ill more often.

Recovery starts with small steps. Set clearer boundaries around working hours, take proper breaks and use your time off. Talk to your manager about your workload where possible, and lean on friends and family. Regular sleep, exercise and time outdoors also help.

If you feel hopeless, cannot cope or notice signs of depression, speak to a doctor. Support is available.
