Hay fever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to pollen from trees, grasses or weeds. It can cause sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and itchy, watery eyes.
- Check daily pollen forecasts and limit time outdoors when counts are high.
- Keep windows closed on high-pollen days, at home and in the car.
- Shower and change your clothes after spending time outside.
- Wear wraparound sunglasses to help keep pollen out of your eyes.
- Avoid drying laundry outdoors during peak season.
Antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays and eye drops can help, and a pharmacist can advise which suit you. See a doctor if treatments do not control your symptoms, or if you also wheeze, cough or feel short of breath, as hay fever can be linked with asthma.
