Arthritis means inflammation or damage in the joints. The two most common types behave quite differently.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form. The smooth cartilage covering the ends of bones gradually wears down, causing pain and stiffness. It often affects the knees, hips, hands and spine, becomes more common with age, and stiffness usually eases within about 30 minutes of getting up.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the lining of the joints. It often affects the same joints on both sides of the body, such as both hands. Morning stiffness tends to last longer, and people may also feel tired or unwell.
See a doctor if your joints are painful, swollen or stiff for more than a few weeks. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis helps protect the joints from lasting damage.
