Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not use insulin properly, so blood sugar levels rise. It often comes on gradually, and many people have no obvious symptoms at first. Possible signs include:

  • Feeling very thirsty and urinating more often, especially at night.
  • Tiredness.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Cuts or sores that heal slowly.
  • Frequent infections, such as thrush or urinary infections.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Your risk is higher if you are older, overweight or inactive, have a close relative with diabetes, or had diabetes during pregnancy. Some ethnic groups also have a higher risk.

A simple blood test, such as HbA1c, can check for diabetes, so ask your doctor about testing if you have symptoms or risk factors. Seek urgent care if you feel very unwell, are vomiting, or are extremely thirsty and drowsy.
