Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It affects the plantar fascia, a band of tissue running along the sole of the foot. Pain is often worst with the first steps in the morning or after sitting for a while.
It is more likely with:
- A sudden increase in walking, running or standing.
- Tight calf muscles.
- Unsupportive or worn-out shoes.
- Extra body weight.
To ease it, rest from activities that make it worse, wear supportive shoes with cushioned heels, and stretch your calves and feet regularly. An ice pack wrapped in a cloth and over-the-counter pain relief may also help. Most people improve over several months. See a doctor or podiatrist if the pain is severe, follows an injury, comes with numbness or tingling, or is not improving after a few weeks.
