Ear wax is natural and protective. It traps dust and germs, and in most people it moves out of the ear on its own, so ears rarely need cleaning inside.
- Clean only the outer ear with a washcloth.
- Avoid putting cotton swabs, fingers or other objects into the ear canal, as they can push wax deeper or damage the eardrum.
- Avoid ear candles, which do not work and can cause burns.
- If wax builds up, ear drops from a pharmacy can soften it. Ask a pharmacist which product suits you.
If drops do not help, a doctor or nurse can remove the wax safely. Do not use drops if you have, or might have, a hole in your eardrum. See a doctor if you have ear pain, discharge, sudden hearing loss, dizziness or ringing in your ears.
