A blood pressure reading has two numbers. The top number (systolic) is the pressure when your heart beats, and the bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure between beats, for example 118/76 mmHg.
A reading below 120/80 is generally considered healthy. Readings that are consistently higher may mean high blood pressure (hypertension), although the exact thresholds vary between guidelines. High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, so regular checks are the only way to know.
Helpful habits include:
- Eating less salt and more fruit and vegetables.
- Being active on most days.
- Limiting alcohol and not smoking.
- Keeping a healthy weight.
Some people also need medicine. Seek emergency help if a very high reading comes with chest pain, shortness of breath, a severe headache, confusion, weakness or vision changes.
