A urine test, also called a urinalysis, checks the appearance, concentration and content of your urine. It is quick, painless and can give useful clues about your health.
Doctors use urine tests to:
- Check for urinary tract infections.
- Look for signs of kidney problems.
- Detect sugar in the urine, which can be a sign of diabetes.
- Confirm pregnancy.
- Monitor certain conditions and medicines.
You will usually be asked for a “clean-catch” sample: wash your hands, clean the genital area, start urinating into the toilet, then collect the middle part of the stream in the container. Tell your doctor about any medicines or supplements you take, or if you have your period, as these can affect results. An unusual result often needs a repeat test or further checks before any diagnosis is made.
