Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV, often cause no symptoms, so testing is the only reliable way to know your status. Most STIs are treatable, and many are curable.
Consider getting tested if:
- You have a new partner or more than one partner.
- A partner has tested positive for an STI.
- You notice unusual discharge, sores, itching or pain when urinating.
- You had sex without a condom.
Testing is usually quick and confidential. It may involve a urine sample, a swab or a blood test, and you can ask your doctor or a sexual health clinic. If you test positive, follow the treatment advice, tell recent partners so they can get tested too, and avoid sex until treatment is complete. Using condoms reduces the risk of most STIs.
