Men’s Mental Health: Recognizing the Signs and Reaching Out

Depression and anxiety can look different in men, and reaching out for support is a sign of strength.

Mental health problems affect men as much as anyone, but men are often less likely to talk about them or ask for help. Depression and anxiety can also show up in ways that are easy to overlook.

Signs to watch for include:

  • Irritability, anger or a short temper.
  • Drinking more alcohol or using drugs to cope.
  • Losing interest in work, hobbies or family life.
  • Trouble sleeping, tiredness or unexplained aches.
  • Taking more risks than usual.

Talking to someone you trust is a good first step, and a doctor can discuss options such as talking therapy or medicine. Exercise, sleep and staying connected also help. If you or someone you know has thoughts of suicide, seek help immediately by calling emergency services or a crisis line (in the US, call or text 988).
