Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which carries signals from the eye to the brain. It is often linked to raised pressure inside the eye.
The most common type develops slowly and painlessly, affecting side vision first, so many people do not notice it until damage has occurred. Lost vision cannot be restored, but treatment can protect the sight you have.
Your risk is higher if you:
- Are over 40.
- Have a close relative with glaucoma.
- Are of African, Caribbean or Asian descent.
- Have diabetes or are very nearsighted.
Regular eye exams that check eye pressure and the optic nerve can detect it early. Treatment may include eye drops, laser or surgery. Seek emergency care for sudden severe eye pain with a red eye, blurred vision, halos around lights, headache or vomiting.
