UTIs are common and usually easy to treat, but some symptoms need prompt medical care.

A urinary tract infection (UTI) happens when bacteria infect part of the urinary system, most often the bladder. UTIs are much more common in women, but anyone can get one.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Pain or burning when urinating.
  • Needing to urinate often or urgently.
  • Cloudy, dark or strong-smelling urine.
  • Pain low in the abdomen.

See a doctor, as antibiotics are often needed. Seek care the same day if you have a fever, shivering, pain in your back or side, or vomiting, which may mean a kidney infection. Men, pregnant women, children and people with repeated infections should always be checked.

To lower your risk, drink enough fluids, do not hold in urine for long, urinate after sex, and wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
