A healthy sex life is built on trust, respect and clear communication, and consent is at the center of it.
Consent should be:
- Freely given: without pressure, guilt or threats.
- Ongoing: anyone can change their mind at any time, even partway through.
- Informed and specific: agreeing to one thing does not mean agreeing to everything.
- Clear: someone who is asleep, very drunk or unable to respond cannot consent.
Good communication also means talking about boundaries, contraception, STI testing and what feels good, ideally at a relaxed time rather than in the heat of the moment. Listen without judgment and check in with each other. If you have experienced sexual violence or pressure, support is available from your doctor, a sexual health service or a confidential helpline.
