Pelvic pain is felt in the lower part of the abdomen, below the belly button. It can be mild or severe, brief or long-lasting, and it has many possible causes, including:

  • Period pain and ovulation pain.
  • Endometriosis, where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows elsewhere.
  • Ovarian cysts or fibroids.
  • Infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease or urinary tract infections.
  • Bowel problems, such as constipation or irritable bowel syndrome.

See a doctor if pain is new, persistent or keeps returning, or if it comes with unusual bleeding, discharge or pain during sex.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden or severe pain, pain with fever or vomiting, fainting, or pain when you are or might be pregnant, as this can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy.
